FirstEnergy Corp. shareholders reject two resolutions questioning the use of coal

AKRON — Nearly two-thirds of the power that FirstEnergy Corp. generates now comes from coal-fired boilers, power plants that may require extensive new pollution controls to meet even tougher federal air standards that are expected with months.

That potential expense prompted an environmental advocacy group and FirstEnergy shareholder, As You Sow, to propose a shareholder resolution requesting that the company issue a report on the future financial risks of burning coal.

The suggestion was one of two anti-coal resolutions up for a vote Tuesday at FirstEnergy’s annual shareholder meeting.
