Santa’s workshop has nothing on this place. Toys stretch from one of the Southside Mall to the other, in preparation for Saturday’s Seventh Annual Massey Energy Christmas Extravaganza.
Massey’s Jimetta McCoy says she and others who work for the company feel fortunate to have good jobs. McCoy says Massey’s workers and spouses think it’s very important to give to others who may be struggling to make ends meet.
The Mingo and Pike County school districts identified 55-hundred eligible students and their siblings to receive gifts. They’ll all gather here at the mall Saturday morning at 9:00. Massey also provides a turkey to each family and buys all of the toys. 150 Massey volunteers will staff the even to make sure everything goes smoothly.
The Southside Mall partners by offering the space. The mall’s manager is Sheryle Sullivan. She says the facilities owners are always eager to give back to the community.
Besides the Southside Mall, Massey is also hosting parties for children in Kanawha, Boone and Logan counties. Perhaps as a reflection of our difficult economic times, Massey spokesman Troy Andes says the need is as great as ever.
Andes says the company will provide gifts and food to more than 6000 children in all.
